I’ve been coaching soccer and running camps in the Greater Richmond area since 1980 with the same concept: Learn while having fun.
I give young children good instruction in basic soccer skills without putting competitive pressure on them. Soccer is a game; it should be fun.
The smallest campers, 3 ½-5 years old, alternate learning the basics with playing skill games. The coaches are all young people who have played on my teams and were selected because they have good rapport working with the youngsters.
The older campers, ages 6-13, will be divided into two groups: 6-8 years old, and 9-13 years old. They will practice different drills to cover … as much as possible in five days … the basic skills needed for soccer. But they’ll enjoy themselves, too. All the campers take frequent water breaks (and the ever-popular popsicle break!)
When we reach the last day I want everyone to have had an enjoyable experience, and to come away with more confidence in ball handling and knowledge of game tactics. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt and a trophy at the end of the week.
The Camp Director at the Sabot Stony Point camps is Jack Baxter. Coach Baxter is currently a VCU student who attended the Leeds United Youth Academy in England and played on the Selby Town F.C. youth team in North Yorkshire. He also played on the Richmond Kickers Inaugural National Academy Team, and was a Longwood University Scholarship athlete.
